it was an exhausting and exciting day! luke made me poached eggs on toast and coffee and i let him critique my makeup. i think he is pleased to have a more glamorous wifey, he has been commenting on me wearing makeup and nicer clothes. arrived at the office just before 8 and had a refresher tour of the facilities and employees before starting session at 8.30.
8.30-4.30 was intensive training on the 'old' OSHA and 'new' OSHA and their similarities and differences to european and canadian regulations, and the borders to EPA and FDA. anyone producing and distributing goods must have them labelled and a 'Safety Data Sheet' to go along with them. a ruling in march made those specifications make a bit more sense, but there is a transition period in which you have to know what things on all sorts of sheets means.
for the first two hours i was completely shell-shocked. it felt like starting a year-in to a degree, or missing the three intro classes required to take a course. 90% of people getting the training knew a little bit of what we were doing and throwing around technical jargon and asking long-winded questions of the speaker. i started to think i was completely wrong for the job and would never understand. somehow managed to keep listening, and by the end of the day things were falling into place. there's 6 more days of that.
didn't help my comprehension of all this new info that in breaktime and lunchtimes me and the other new lady had to do admin things like set up our email and sign our health insurance stuff. busy busy. it was bonding for us though, to raid the stationery cupboard in excitement and to chug diet coke. her name is Fung, but she goes by Gerri. she's Chinese. she has two children, aged 5 and 6. i suspect she is in her mid-thirties. she used to work in biomedical sciences at Pitt. her husbands name is Tom, and she said people always enjoy laughing at their names. she still seemed to find it funny. she has a good sense of humour and is friendly.
sorry about the lack of punctuation and general lack of cohesion.
-- and i forgot to mention, it's luke's birthday, too! he keeps forgetting and everytime i say, "this is for your birthday", he remembers and gets excited again. birthday goldfish haha. off to celebrate more. or maybe sleep.
hurray for first (and second) days of work! exhausting. always. you will totally get in the swing of it and soon be the funnest most confident one there. and the one with the best makeup, no doubt.
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear the report! I wonder if you are best buds with Fung now that we are 4 days into it. You will be a wonderful addition to this bunch of chemists!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the encouragement and support! Friendships are developing and I'm enjoying the work. I tried to explain to Jodi tonight about what I'm training in and she thought it was the most dull thing so I will make sure not to bore the rest of you too much ;)
