DIY day

We met up with Heather, our mortgage broker this morning to officially apply for one! I think the worst of the paperwork may now be over.. Phew!
Last night I was feeling sad that it was Sunday night and that Luke would be going back to work. He asked me what things I wished I was able to do while I was at school. I couldn't think of much at the time but today my brain has been in the right place to make fun for itself. I did some calling around insurance companies to get quotes for our housing insurance and put some furniture that we don't want to move with us online.
I'm thinking about selling my wedding dress at a consignment store. Any married (or not) ladies have thoughts on that? My mom rented hers, and sometimes I wish she'd had it at home for me to touch, but I'd never want to have worn it to my wedding! My dress probably isn't being stored properly in my cupboard here, and I suppose I'd like it to get to go to another wedding before it goes out of style.
Anyway, onto the fun! I've been sitting outside sanding down an old writing desk we found somewhere, and listening to podcasts about counter-terrorism. The desk had quite a nice dark varnish on it but areas were yellowing and there are some deep scratches. Once I finish I think I'll give it a natural varnish with some oil. It's slow work, you can see, I've only done one leg so far! There was a little storm of heavy rain so I had to run inside, but that gave me a chance to write to you, Alice.

This is all thanks to Sue, because she lent me an Edith Schaeffer book (The Hidden Art) in which sanding furniture is recommended as a meditative tool. I'll let you know when I figure out the meaning of life.

EDIT: Luke came home and told me that I was using sandpaper that's too fine. He helped out anyway, refreshed with a bit of iced hibiscus tea.

  1. Sell the dress. Die, sentimentality!

  2. I have to agree with the above, non-sentimental opinion about the dress. Dragging things around for years does not usually yield the positives we hope for, but adds a burden to our lives! STUFF!

I like the table. Fun to give it a new look. ;)
